Many times, children on the autism spectrum have delayed areas of development. Our children had some challenges with gross motor skills, and it became evident when trying to teach them to run, skip, and ride a bike. Motor planning is a valuable skill for all children to learn. Below are a few resources that have helped our children gain the confidence to "try" and the gross motor skills they need.
Balance bikes are a great way for your child to gain the confidence they need to learn to balance and ride a bike. They are able to use their legs to support their weight as their bodies and brains learn what it takes to maintain balance.
Scooters are great ways to teach both balance and using the legs to propel your child along. This does take practice, but we love this brand because it allows younger children to utilize a seat until they are able to stand and scoot. It also helps your child turn by just leaning their body instead of turning the steering bar. Less skills to master all at once! Win! Win!
Trampolines are great way to help your child learn to jump, skip and run in a safe environment. Not only does it give your child great vestibular input, but learning valuable gross motor skills on the trampoline is a fun for the whole family!
Fine motor skills often get pushed to the back burner with kids on the autism spectrum. Many times, the focus needed for these skills makes it extremely challenging for children with asd to succeed, but with repetitive practice, these skills can be learned and even mastered over time. Working with your Occupational therapist and helping your child at home will help your child gain the confidence needed to grow these skills and help them thrive in daily tasks.
Lacing beads are great for children working on their pincer grasp. we love these specific lacing beads because there is a little wooden piece on the end of the string that helps little hands push the string through the hole of the bead. They are super cute too!
little hands have a hard time grasping "regular" crayons. These finger crayons can fit inside your toddler's palm making it easier for them to have the tri-pod grasp that sets them up for success in writing later on. We love that these are very tough to break and non-toxic for our kids that love to put things in their mouths.
Nuts and bolts are wonderful for teaching the dexterity needed to twist and turn. this movement helps both their writs and fingers as they grasp and twist. These nuts and bolts were always a very calming movement for my boys. and these specific ones help children learn their upper and lower case letters!
